9/21/25- Hortons 8 - Meadowlarks 6
The Hortons’ big bats and stout defense fueled a comeback from a 3-run deficit for their first win of the fall, in a tense 8-6 over the Meadowlarks.
The Meadowlarks struck first in the top of the 1st against Chris Bernacki. John Sullivan reached on an infield single, and after 2 walks, sac flys by Mike Martindell and Ron Totten, and a wild pitch made it 3-0. The Hortons answered with one of their own off of John Wills when Micah Winston singled and came around on John Malikowski’s RBI single, but a rally was squelched on a confusing dropped infield fly that turned into a double-play.
The Hortons cut the deficit to 1 in the 2nd when Mike Olkin scored on Bernacki’s RBI hit with one out. The Meadowlarks, however, pushed the lead back up to 3 in the top of the 3rd. Sullivan led off with a single, advanced on a passed ball and scored on Wills’ line single to LF, with Wills advancing on the throw, and scoring on Martindell’s RBI grounder. Winston then bashed a triple that bounced off a tumbling Chris Scanlon’s glove in LF and scored on Malikowski’s single. Catcher Matt Boulanger then gunned down Malikowski trying to advance on a wild pitch.
Trailing 5-3, the Hortons’ bats exploded in the 4th. Shawn O’Grady blasted a ground-rule double to right-center and scored on Diego Ortiz’s single. With 2 outs, Chad Walker lofted an RBI triple and scored on Tom Salvini’s single.
Both teams brought in relievers who threw blanks in the 5th – Bill Evans for the Hortons and Gary Webber for the Meadowlarks. The Hortons plated another in the 6th when Ortiz, Scott Dunaisky and Mike Olkin singled to load the bases, and with 1 out, Salvini hit a sac fly to RF. Meanwhile, Evans was effective, allowing only 3 baserunners in 3 scoreless innings, helped out by a slick double play in the 7th by 2B Walker/SS Dunaisky and a magnificent diving catch in LF by O’Grady with no outs and 1 on in the 8th.
In the bottom of the 8th, the Hortons scored one more. O’Grady singled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Dunaisky’s single, but the throw home was cut off by Webber, who threw Dunaisky out trying to take 2B.
Down 3 and with 3 outs to go, the Meadowlarks mounted a threat against Evans. Totten singled and was forced out at 2B, and with 2 outs, Eric Bennett singled and Hector Arroyo dropped in an RBI single to make it 8-6. With the go-ahead run at the plate, Evans induced an easy 1-3 groundout to earn the save.
Top hitters for the Meadowlarks were John Sullivan (2-4, 2R), Mike Martindell (2 RBI), Hector Arroyo (2-3, RBI, HBP) and Gary Webber (2-3, 2B). For the Hortons, Micah Winston (3-4, 3B, 2 R), John Malikowski (3-4, 2 RBI), Shawn O’Grady (2-4, 3B, 2R), Diego Ortiz (2-4, 2R, RBI), Scott Dunaisky (3-4, RBI) and Tom Salvini (1-2, 2 RBI).
