10/5/25- Sons of Pitches 17 - Hortons 15
It was a tale of 2 half games. The Hortons won the first 5 innings 8-0 behind the 1-hit pitching of Bill Evans, and the Sons won the last 4 innings 17-7, teeing off on the Hortons relievers and taking advantage of walks and the Sun – at least 5 fly balls were misplayed in the game due to the blinding light in the sky.
The Hortons powerful offense scored 3 runs in the first off of substitute pitcher Rick Fleurent. Micah Winston led off with a bunt single, Bill Evans reached on a Sun-influenced E8, John Malikowski hit an RBI FC, Diego Garcia singled in Evans and Scott Dunaisky doubled in Garcia.
In the 3rd, the Hortons tacked on 2 more. Shawn O’Grady led off with a double, scored on a single by Garcia, who then scored on Chad Walker’s double. In the 4th, they pushed the lead to 8-0. Dunaisky singled in O’Grady, who had reached on an error, and then Mike Olkin rapped a 2-run single with the bases juiced. Meanwhile, Evans was brilliant on the mound, allowing only 4 baserunners (1 hit, 2 HBP, BB) while fanning 6.
Tom Salvini climbed the mound for the Hortons in the top of the 6th and was tagged for 3 runs. Sub Jon Adolph singled, was erased on a FC, Mark Caputo singled, Morriss Partee smacked an RBI single and Stephen Higgins reached on a FC/E-5, scoring 2 runs.
Short on pitchers, the Sons put Emilio Chaverri on the mound to make his league debut in the 5th, and it went pretty well, as he only allowed 1 hit in 2 innings, while whiffing 1.
In the top of the 7th, the bottom fell out for the Hortons, as the Sons took a 9-8 lead with some solar assistance. Jack Wileden led off with a single, and after a FC, Adolph singled again, Stephen Malachite walked, Mark Caputo hit an RBI single, Partee had a sac fly, Stephen Higgins walked to load the bases, and Chaverri took a free pass to force in a run. The next batter, Fleurent, lofted a lazy fly ball to CF but Winston couldn’t see it as it came down through the Sun and it clanked off his glove, scoring 2 to tie the game. Terry Randall then popped to SS Evans who also dropped it while battling the Sun, and Wileden followed with his 2nd single of the inning to give the Sons the lead.
Partee came on to pitch the 7th and allowed 1 run on an RBI single by O’Grady that tied the game.
Hoping for a shut-down inning, the Hortons sent John Malikowski to the mound, but he allowed 3 consecutive singles to Adolph, Malachite and Caputo and an RBI groundout by Partee for an 11-9 lead. However, the next 3 batters walked, so Hortons manager Winston put himself in to pitch. It didn’t go any better for him. Randall hit an RBI single, as did Dane Boryta, and then CFer Dunaisky tried to make a basket catch of Adolph’s fly ball to avoid looking in the Sun and it hit off his glove, scoring 2 more runs.
The powerful Hortons offense didn’t give up, though. In the bottom of the 8th, Dunaisky led off with a triple and scored on Walker’s double. With the bases loaded, Malikowski then cleared them with a long single to make the score 16-13.
In the top of the 9th, the Sons scored another off of Winston on a bases loaded walk to Wileden, that plated Higgins, who had singled.
The Sons brought Chaverri back out to pitch the 9th, but he hit Dunaisky, Walker singled, and then Olkin and Tom Salvini walked to make it 17-15. Partee relieved and allowed an RBI FC to Winston before inducing the last 2 batters to pop out with the tying runs on base.
Offensive stars for the Sons of Pitches were Mark Caputo (4-5, 3 R, 2 RBI), Jon Adolph (3-6, 2R) and Jack Wileden (2-3, 2BB, 2 RBI). For the Hortons: Shawn O’Grady (4-6, 2B, 2 R, RBI), Scott Dunaisky (3-5, 3B, HBP, 3 R, 2RBI), Chad Walker (3-5, 2 2B, BB, R, 2 RBI), and Mike Olkin (3-4, BB, 2RBI).
10/5/25- Meadowlarks 11 - Spiders 8 (10inn)
It was an unusually hot October morning at Anniversary Field for the second meeting of the Meadowlarks and the Spiders. On the mound for the Spiders was krafty Kenny Sloat, and for the Larks it was John “JW” Wills.
The Meadowlarks started early, plating three runs in the top of the first. Eli Pacheco whacked a bomb that scored two, followed by a Jose Nieves RBI single to make it 3-0. In the bottom frame Micheal “Miguel” Ringler scored on a Jeff Whitehead bomb for the Spiders to make it 3-1.
In the bottom of the 2nd the Spiders unloaded on Wills for 4 runs. RBI singles by Russ Dupere and Mitch Gaslin were followed by a line drive to right centerfield by Nolan Anaya that rolled to the shrubs to drive in two more. 5-3 Spiders after 2.
The Larks responded in kind in the third inning. Hector Arroyo hit an RBI single and Ron “Tater” Totten knocked in another run to tie it up 5-5.
In the fifth inning both teams went to the bullpen: the Spiders sent Whitehead to the mound and the short staffed Meadowlarks brought in free agent Greg “G-Bomb” Elbaum (who subbed for the Spiders a few weeks prior).
The Larks broke up the tie in the top of the sixth when Totten scored on a Mike Martindell sac fly. In the 8th with the bases juiced, Chris “Chaka” Scanlon got a run home on a fielder’s choice to make it 7-5 in favor of the Meadowlarks.
With the game in the balance the Spiders fought back in the bottom of the 9th and quickly loaded the bases with no outs. In the mayhem Whitehead and Jim Fogerty scored 2 to tie the game, but G-Bomb bore down and left the bases juiced…on to extra innings.
In the top of the 10th inning, with Wills’ on second as the automatic runner, Arroyo singled and advanced the runner to third. Then, in what at first looked like a fielder’s choice for Totten, turned into an automatic double play because Arroyo did not get out of the way of the fielder. With two down Nieves singled to knock in Wills, Martindell walked, and Scanlon was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Elbaum induced a walk to bring another run home. Sullivan hit an RBI single, and Scanlon scored from third on a wild pitch. Suddenly the Larks were now up 11-7.
The Spiders fought back and scored a run in the bottom of the 10th after a RBI sacrifice from Tom Bombard to bring designated runner Jerold Duquette home. Despite getting three batters on base in the inning, the Spiders couldn’t cash in; the Meadowlarks closed it out for their 2nd win of Fall Ball 2025.
