6/12/25- Plugs 8 - Phillies 6

WP: Jeff Whitehead

LP Colin Hosley

The undefeated Phillies hosted the Plug Uglies at The Beachgrounds in South Hadley on a beautiful June night. It was the first meeting of the two teams since they faced each other in the 2024 championship game. It was a battle of the aces (Colin Hosley for the Phillies and Jeff Whitehead for the Uglies) and yet another drama filled clash between these heated rivals.

The Plugs got things started in the top of the first with leadoff hitter Bill Evans reaching on a single, then scoring on catcher Matt Boulanger’s RBI hit. Greg “G-Bomb” Elbaum singled and knocked in the Uglies backstop to add another run. But the Phils struck back quickly when Micah Winston reached on an E-4 and Steve Malachite walked. Hosley hit a catchable fly ball to right, but the ball was dropped and Winston scored. Rookie skipper Andy Klepacki stepped to the plate and whacked a single to knock in two, and an eventful 1st inning ended with the Phillies up 3-2.

“Hos” kept the Plugly bats in check for the next four innings, leading into the bottom half of the 5th when the Phightin’ Phils tacked on another run: John “JW” Wills walked, advanced on a Jon “JR” Ross single, then scored on a Ron “Tater” Totten groundout RBI. The score was 4-2 in favor of the Phillies after 5.

The Uglies caught a break in the top of the 6th when Boulanger reached on a E-5. Whitehead helped his own cause and hit a bomb that turned into a triple and scored Boulanger. Morris “Mo” Partee hit into a 6-3 groundout that got Whitehead home and suddenly the game was tied. From there neither team could break the stalemate and the game was sent into extra innings.

Starting the eighth the Uglies sent in Evans as the automatic runner on 2nd. He advanced to third when Boulanger reached on an error, and the Phils chose to intentionally walk Whitehead to load the bases with no outs. Partee was next and his patient at-bat paid off with an RBI walk. Elbaum reached when a grounder to short was thrown home to get the force, but near the plate Boulanger was hit with the throw and was safe. Next Jeff Cabana and Mike Olkin both singled and drove in a run each. There could’ve been more damage, but with Kenny Sloat pitching in relief the Phillies executed a perfect 1-2-3 double play to end the inning. But suddenly the Plug Uglies had the lead 8-4.

In the bottom of the 8th the Phillies placed Jim “Kruk” Fogarty on 2nd as the automatic runner, who was soon joined by Ross who walked. That set the table for a two out Ron Totten clutch single that scored both runners to make it 8-6. Line drive hitter Michael “Miguel” Ringler tried to keep the rally going, but Whitehead, going the distance for the Plugs, got him to hit into a 1-3 grounder and the ballgame was over.

Final score: Plug Uglies 8, Phillies 6
