On a steamy and buggy Wednesday night at Mitchell Field, the Phillies improved to 6-1 by halting the Wonders win streak at 1 with a 7-2 victory…which turned into a nail-biter through 5 innings.
The visiting Phillies struck first when Micah Winston led of with a single and stole 2B, followed by a single by Stephen Malachite and a walk to Paul Griswold. However, Wonders starter Patrick Olearcek, escaped the jam by inducing slugger Colin Hosley into a fine 6-4-3 DP by SS Shawn Thompson and 2B Tod Garfield on which Winston scored, and then getting the final out on a pop-up.
Tom Sebastyn led off the Wonders first with a single and stolen base, and then Thompson hit a screaming liner down the left-field line which Jon “JR” Ross nabbed while stumbling to his knees, got back up and threw to 2B to double off Sebastyn who had been running on the play.
Over the next 3 innings, neither team would score, although the Phillies loaded the bases in the 2nd & 3rd innings before Olearcek ended each inning with comebackers. Meanwhile, Phillies hurler Colin Hosley was dominant, allowing only 4 baserunners over the next 5 innings.
The defensive highlight of the game came in the top of the 4th, when Ross lined a ball to RF that deflected off of Luke Cavagnac’s glove. Cavagnac, using 2 hands (Kids, always catch with 2 hands!) and intense concentration, juggled the ball in the air 3 times before it nestled safely in his glove.
The Phillies pushed across another run in the 5th when Paul Kaplan singled and came around on Miguel Ringler’s RBI fielder’s choice for a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the 6th, the Phil’s offense finally broke through with a crucial 3-spot. With 1 out, Andy Klepacki singled and stole 2B, and then Ross reached 2B on a throwing error, scoring Klepacki. Jim Fogarty followed with his 2nd line drive single to LF, scoring Ross. After a force-out and a walk, John Wills smashed an RBI single up the middle to score Sean St. Marie for a 5-0 lead.
The Phils tacked on 2 more in the 7th off of relief pitcher Thompson. Ringler and Winston both singled and stole 2B. Stephen Malachite then grounded to SS, and with Ringler running on contact, the throw home was knocked out of catcher Steve Higgins’ glove during the tag. Griswold then brought Winston home with a towering sacrifice fly to LF.
Winston relieved Hosley in the 7th, allowing 2 runs. With 1 out, Thompson singled and stole 2B & 3B, and Garfield walked and advanced on a wild pitch. Andy Ayres then lined an RBI single to LF and another run came in on Kevin O’Grady’s RBI groundout. Winston looked to have shut the door with an infield popup, but the ball bounced off of 3B Hosley’s glove. He quickly picked it up and tossed it to first for the final out as the batter hadn’t run to the bag (Kids, always run out pop-ups!).
