2026 Summer League Results- Week 12

7/15/26- Wonders 9 - Fainting Goats 11

The Fainting Goats overcame a 5-run deficit and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th for their 2nd win of the year, over a short-handed Wonders team.

The Goats started southpaw Tom Salvini on the mound and the Wonders countered with Bob Mastorakis. The Wonders drew first blood when Brett Constantine laid down a perfect bunt single, stole 2B and scored on Andy Ayres’ RBI single. The Goats countered with a pair in their half of the frame. Mike Martindell led off with a single, and after a walk to Tom Conway, Shawn O’Grady blasted an RBI double to right-center, and Paul Iellamo followed with an RBI smash of his own, however Mastorakis was able to staunch the bleeding by getting the next 2 batters to hit long fly outs to LF Luke Cavagnac.

After a scoreless top of the 2nd, the Goats increased their lead to 3-1 when Jerrold Duquette led off with a single, and after a walk to Eddie Esposito, Salvini helped his cause by lining an RBI single to RF.

The floodgates opened for the Wonders in the top of the 3rd. Substitute Isotope, John Sullivan led off with a walk and stole 2B. Constantine double him in, Tod Garfield singled and Ayres walked to load the bases. Then came an avalanche of RBI singles by Steve Higgins, Kevin O’Grady, Cavagnac and Mastorakis. Tom Conway entered in relief and gave up an RBI single to substitute Phillie Micah Winston before finally inducing a 1-2-3 DP. When the dust had cleared, the Wonders led 9-3.

The Goats, not to be daunted, started to chip away. They added a pair in the 3rd when walks to Martindell, Conway and O’Grady loaded the bases with no outs, Iellamo singled in 1 run, and Josh Weiss’s RBI FC brought in another. Conway retired 6 of the next 7 batters he faced, including snaring a line drive off the bat of Winston to end the 5th.

Meanwhile, his teammates added 3 more in the 4th off of new pitcher Chris Ciepiela via RBI singles from Salvini, Conway and a long SF by Shawn O’Grady, which was hauled in by RF Ayres who had positioned himself perfectly. The Goats finally tied the game in the 5th when Jeff Burniske walked and Weiss and Duquette singled to load the bases. Jo Ratcliffe lined a sure RBI single up the middle, but CF Winston scooped it up and threw to 2B where Constantine made a nifty acrobatic grab of the 1-hopped throw to force Duquette at 2b, as the run scored.

The Wonders threatened in the top of the 6th, putting 2 runners on with 1 out, but Conway induced 2 easy force outs. The Goats pulled away for good in the bottom of the frame. Martindell reached on an error, Conway legged out an infield hit and Shawn O’Grady was plunked to load the bases with no outs. Iellamo grounded to 3B and the throw from Sullivan home beat the runner, but the ball fell out of catcher Higgins’ glove. After a force out at home from Constantine to Higgins, Duquette singled in the 2nd run. Another force out at home to 3B Sullivan, the defensive star of the game, ended the rally.

Needing 2 runs to tie, the Wonders sent Kevin O’Grady to the plate, but his screaming liner was snared by SS Shawn O’Grady (of course, and no relation). Cavagnac followed with a single, but Conway got two groundouts, with 3B Esposito making the final play of the game.

7/16/26- Plus Uglies 12 - Isotopes 5

The Isotopes hosted the Plug Uglies at Mitchell Field as a smoky haze from Canadian wildfires hovered over Holyoke. Despite another evening with grim weather warnings, TNB games kept rolling.

The Plugs got to work in the top of the first against Topes ace Gary Weber. Morris “Mo” Partee hit a single to drive in a run. In the bottom frame the Isotopes were able to get three runners in scoring position, but Uglies starter Bill Evans got out of the inning unscathed.

In the top of the second the Uglies got their second run via a groundout RBI from Jack Wileden. In the bottom half the Topes got on the board when Chad Walker walked and scored on a Scott Dunaisky double. Then Dunaisky scored on an E-3 to even up the score 2-2.

In the bottom of the third Weber walked and got to second on a Walker single. Then a bomb to centerfield off the bat of skipper Mike Arbour rolled into the brush to score two runs and give the Topes a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Sullivan hit a double and was knocked in by Ed Cauley, who crushed a big double. He later scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 5-2 in favor of the Isotopes.

With the Topes taking charge, the Plugs bench was deflated in the top of the 5th. But somehow the visitors got into gear and batted around to take the lead. Greg Elbaum singled and got to third on a Nolan Anaya double, then scored on a groundout by Jack Wileden. Anaya scored on an E-6, then the Plugs loaded the bases and scored two more on Tope fielding miscues. Rob “Ecc” Eccleston hit a sacrifice fly to score a run, Partee singled to bring in another, and Matt Boulanger walked to force a runner home. When the dust settled the Uglies scored 7 to take a 9-5 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth singles by Terry Randall, John “Sully” Sullivan, and Cauley had the bases juiced with one out. But Evans got out of the jam to leave the runners stranded.

In the top of the 7th the Uglies padded their lead with three more runs. Evans tripled and scored on a sac fly, then reliever Scott Dunaisky loaded the bases. Two runs came home when Steve Wall walked in a run and Elbaum hit an RBI single.

Jeff Whitehead worked two innings of relief and shut the door with a 1-2-3 seventh, and the Uglies took the season series over the Topes 2 games to 1. Final Score: Plug Uglies 12, Isotopes 5.

7/16/26- Grays 11 - Phillies 1

In a third face-off between the top two teams in the league, the Phillies needed a win, tie or loss by 1 run to clinch first place, while the Dorian Grays needed to win by 3 or more runs to give them a leg up (What would have happened in a 2-run Grays win is anyone’s guess…). The Grays were up to the challenge, scoring 4 in the 1st and leaving no doubt as to the outcome.

Facing Ken Sloat, the Grays took advantage of cracks in the Phillies’ normally stout defense and ran wild by scoring 4 error-aided runs. Tim Tremblay led off with a single, stole 2nd and scored when Ken Hartwright reached on an infield error. With one out, Steve Cole reached on an unsuccessful fielder’s choice and Hartwright scored on an errant pickoff throw. Jay Sadowski singled in Cole, stole 2B and scored on John Malikowski’s RBI single.

The Dorian Grays put fireballer Tim Sigda on the mound, and while a bit wild (3 BBs & 1 HPB in the first 3 innings), he held the Phillies hitless until Paul Griswold’s single in the 4th.

The Grays added another run in the 2nd when Dave Rist doubled down the RF line and scored on Tremblay’s double down the opposite line. They tacked on another in the 3rd when Sigda reached on an E-8 and scored on a throwing error after Cole’s infield hit. They pushed the score to 7-0 in the 4th when Malikowski singled and stole 2B, advanced on an infield out and scored on Mitch Gaslin’s RBI groundout.

The Phillies finally broke through in the 4th. After Griswold’s single, a single by Yami Baker and a sweet 5-3 double play turned by 3B Sadowski, which put Baker at 2B, Jim Fogarty laced an RBI single.

The Grays responded with 4 in the 5th to put the game out of reach. Matt Kostek singled and stole 2B. Rist singled but was doubled off when 1B Klepacki made a fine grab of a liner by Tremblay. However, Hartwright, Sigda, Cole and Sadowski all followed with singles, with Sigda & Sadowski being of the RBI variety.

Dave Rist relieved Sigda in the 6th and retired 6 of the 8 batters he faced, fanning 3.

A bizarre play occurred in the top of the 7th. With 1 out, Kostek and Rist singled off of reliever John Wills, and then Tremblay hit a line drive down the LF line that Miguel Ringler appeared to have made a diving catch on, but the ball dropped out of his glove when he hit the ground. The umpires didn’t see the ball drop, so didn’t say anything, causing the runners to stay where they were. Ringler threw to 3B for the force out and then the ball went to 2B for the apparent DP. After some discussion, the umpires decided that since they didn’t signal an out, it was only fair to call the runner out at 3B, but not at 2B.

The Dorian Grays now have a clear path to the top seed if they can win both of the final games against the tough Plug Uglies, while the Phillies have clinched at least 2nd place and need to beat the Wonders next week and hope for a Grays loss in one of their final games.
