5/13/26- Phillies 4 - Plug Uglies 2 (6inn)
Amid a light sprinkle, the Phils and Plugs went head-to-head in a rematch of a semi-final from last season. The pitching was great, the defense (aided by very long infield grass) was tight, and the Phillies came away with an exciting 4-2 victory that ended after 6 innings due to darkness.
The Phils started junkballer Ken Sloat for the 3rd straight game, while the Plugs countered with Bill Evans. Half the runs were scored in the first inning alone – Micah Winston led off with a double to CF and came around on an RBI single by Colin Hosley. However, the Plugs countered in their half with a pair of runs for a 2-1 lead. With 1 out, Jeff Cabana blasted a double to deep left-center, Matt Boulanger singled and stole 2nd, and then Jeff Whitehead lined a 2-run single to CF.
The Phillies immediately tied it in the top of the 2nd. The red-hot Jim Fogarty led off with a single, advanced on a single by Matt Witek and a groundout, and then came around to score on Miguel Ringler’s RBI groundout to the right side.
Sloat meanwhile settled down, allowing only 2 hits and fanning a pair over the next 2 innings. In the top of the 4th, the Phils plated an unearned run for the lead. Sloat reached on an error, advanced on another hit by Fogarty, and a fielder’s choice, and then scampered home on a wild pitch.
The Phillies plated another unearned run in the top of the 5th. Ron Totten reached on an error, Winston laid down a perfect bunt single, and after a FC, Paul Griswold singled Totten in.
Flame-thrower Hosley relieved Sloat in the bottom of the 4th, and allowed 3 hits, fanning 1 and walking 1 over the next 3 innings for the save, while pitching out of a jam in the 5th. After singles by Morriss Partee and Evans, Mike Olkin lofted a fly ball to shallow CF that Winston made a running catch on, and then Hosley broke Eric Bennett’s bat with an inside pitch that turned into a rally-killing 6-4-3 DP. Whitehead pitched the 6th for the Plugs, fanning 2 of the 3 batters he faced.
Defense was king in this game. For the Plug Uglies, Rob Eccleston was rock-solid at SS, battling the long grass to make several nice plays and saving a run by backing up the pitcher on a throw back to the mound with a runner on 3rd, 1B Justin Gaudette grabbed a high flip from the pitcher with his bare hand for an out, and 2B Nolan Anaya ranged up the middle to throw out the speedy Winston by a step. For the Phillies, the play of the game was 3B Griswold’s diving stab in the 3rd inning on which he got a force out at 2B, avoiding 2 outs and nobody on with the dangerous Whitehead up next.
A big Phillies shout out to Jeff Whitehead for his post-game repairs to the mound at Beachgrounds Park at his own effort and expense.
