Week 11: Sigda Tosses Two-Hitter, Everyone Else Rained Out

Tim Sigda gave up one run on two hits Thursday against the Plug Uglies

Plug Uglies 1

Dorian Grays 2

WP: Tim Sigda

LP: Jeff Whitehead

A day after nasty weather and tornado threats, it was a gorgeous after-the-storm night at Mitchell Field. In their third meeting of the season the Plug Uglies took on the home team Grays, with Jeff Whitehead pitching against Tim Sidga in what turned out to be yet another

pitcher's duel where hits and runs were a hard earned commodity.

The scoring started early in the top of the 1st when Matt Boulanger earned a walk and advanced to 2nd on a Jeff Cabana single. Whitehead came up and singled to right field, with Boulanger making a bold turn around third with the ball coming in from the relay man. As

catcher Steve Powers handled the throw, Boulanger slid to the right side and got his hand on the plate before Powers could get the tag on, a safe call on a very close play. In the bottom frame Whitehead gave up a single, but that was all for the Grays and after one it was Uglies 1, Grays 0.

From there both Sigda and Whitehead were dealing and kept the bats quiet: the Grays went 1-2-3 in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings, while Sigda held the Plugs hitless the rest of the way.

In the 5th inning the Grays finally got on the board with some well placed outfield bombs. Sigda reached on an E-5 and eventually scored on a Jay "Supe" Sadowski shot to right field to tie the game. Up came Steve Powers, who clocked the ball to right centerfield, scoring the Gray's skipper. When all was said and done Powers stood on 3rd with a triple. And just like that, after five innings the Grays had the lead 2-1.

With a tight game on the line, Whitehead was able to keep the Grays off the board in the 6th. In the top of the 7th, facing the heart of the Uglies batting order, Sigda retired all three batters he faced and ended the game on a strikeout, securing the win and a complete game 1 hit gem. Somebody had to win this one, and the defending champs came out on top 2-1. For the Grays the win put them back above .500. For the Uglies it was the sixth game this season where they scored 3 runs or less, but this time they couldn't scratch out a win.

Players of the game: Tim Sigda (7 IP, 6 K, 1 H, 1 ER), Steve Powers (1-2, 1 3B, 1 RBI), Jeff Whitehead (6 IP, 4 K, 3 H, 1 ER and 1 RBI at the plate), Matt Boulanger (1-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB).
