7/16/25- Phillies 2 - Plug Uglies 0

On another hot and sticky evening, 2 of the top 3 teams faced off against each other at Landers Field with the Plug Uglies hosting the second place Phillies, adjacent to a couple hundred high school field hockey players and with their parents, adding both to the spectators and parking woes. A light but much welcomed breeze showed up in the third inning bringing relief to the baking temperatures.

Greg “G-Bomb” Elbaum took the hill against a depleted Phillies lineup. Leadoff hitter Steve “Stretch” Malachite quickly worked a walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error that also put Yami Baker on first. Baker advanced to second and both runners scored on an absolute towering 2-bag BLAST by Colin Hosley over CF that rolled to the trees.

Unfortunately for this write-up, that was the last of the scoring by either team for the entire game as the defense and pitching settled in, combining to put a lid on home plate.

It was not without some exciting defense from both sides. The game produced only 1 error, including some bang-bang double plays and lots of snags on the run on the dirt and in the outfield. For the Uglies, the gloves of outfielders Elbaum, Jon Adolph, Justin Gaudette and Jack Wiliden likely saved upwards of three runs. The Phillies infield secured out after out, contributing to a definitive shutout of the Plugs.

For highlights, the bottom of the third inning featured crowd favorite Eric “Noodles” Bennett slapping a single to right and advanced to second on a soft hit to 1B by Chris “Chaka” Scanlon. When a grounder from Steve Wall got by 3B Hosley, Bennett tried to advance to third. SS Andy “AK” Klepacki gloved the ball deep in the gap and threw it to a recovering Hosley to tag Bennett on the run. The next batter Justin Gaudette hit a slow roller to Wills at 2B, that was bobbled but flipped for a outstretched barehanded grab by Klepacki to force Wall at second and end the inning.

With a combined total of five full at-bats being retired in order, the balance of the game saw only 7 total Phils baserunners and 5 for the Uglies. The game progressed quickly and was wrapped up by 7:30.

It was a solid performance by G-Bomb who pitched 6 complete innings, allowing only 2 runs (1 earned), 2 hits, 3 walks, 1 strike out (that reached on DTS), and stranded 5 runners. Uglies’ closer Jeff Whitehead allowed 1 runner and stranded 1.

Wiley Ken “K’s-load” Sloat pitched 6 innings of shutout ball allowing 3 hits and 1 walk (stranding all 4), striking out 1. Phils’ closer Colin “Hos” Hosley allowed 1 hit by Steve Wall, stranding him by inducing fielder’s choice then striking out the last Ugly batter.

Hosley led the Phils hitting 1-2, 2 RBI, reached on an error.
