Rain Rain...go away!
Rain Rain...go away!

This week's games scheduled for 5/8/25 between the Phillies & Grays and the Wonder's & Goats were cancelled due to rain. Make-ups TBD.

5/7/25- Plugs 4 - Isotopes 3-

WP: Jeff Whitehead. LP: Dave Warner. SV: Greg Elbaum

The only game of Week 2 was a matchup between the Plug Uglies and the Isotopes at Mitchell Field (aka “The Swirl”). Starting for the visitors was Skipper Dave Warner, and for the home team Uglies it was Jeff Whitehead. After an evening of torrential rain, the field was surprisingly playable at game time. The game featured a lot of close calls, excellent defense, and the Topes awesome new powder blue uniforms.

The game had many statistical contradictions. Warner, who pitched a gem (complete game, 3 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) could not secure the win. Meanwhile Uglies pitching was erratic from the 4th inning on: 4 HBP, a bases loaded jam, 10 runners in scoring position. Yet somehow the Plugs held the Topes to 3 runs and played 7 innings of errorless baseball.

In the bottom of the first Jeff Cabana single with two outs, followed by a Matt Bolander single. Whitehead hit a single to right field that scored Cabana. After one, the Uglies were up by one run.

In the bottom of the third Steve Wall singled, Jack Wiliden walked, and Greg “G-Bomb” Elbaum singled to bring in Wall. 2-0 Uglies.

In the top of the fourth the Isotopes got on the board with successive singles from Scott Dunaisky and Michael Arbour. Warner hit into a 6-3 but was able to drive in Dunaisky. Jessie Higginbottom whacked a single that scored Arbour. In the bottom of the fourth Boulanger singled again for the Uglies and was knocked home via another Jeff Whitehead RBI, this time a big double. Rob Eccleston singled down the third base line to drive in Whitehead, and after four innings, it was Plug Uglies 4, Isotopes 2.

In the top of the fifth the Isotopes were able to load the bases with a single, hit by pitch, and a walk. But Whitehead got out of the jam thanks to third baseman Jeff Cabana scooping a grounder for the third out. In the sixth, Bill Evans came on to pitch for the Uglies and loaded the bases with another hit by pitch and two walks. But disaster was averted when Eric “Noodles” Bennett lept and snagged a line drive from Russell Dupere that flung him to the ground.

In the top of the seventh, Elbaum came in to close it out and once again the Topes threatened. Kevin McElhinney walked, Scott Dunaisky was hit by a pitch and Mike Arbour reached on a fielder's choice. Arbour stole second and suddenly two runners were in scoring position. Warner whacked a shot to right that looked like a sure hit that would score two runs, but Mike Olkin raced to make a spectacular catch. The runner on third tagged and scored, but Olkin’s catch and quick pivot to get the ball into the infield kept the Isotopes from causing more damage. Elbaum was able to induce a 6-3 and the ball game was over. Final score: Plug Uglies 4, Isotopes 3.
